Gleaning - Gathering the excess

In Iowa, there is food all around us - growing in the fields and neighborhoods throughout our state.

One of the best ways to get fresh produce into our community is by working with local growers to glean after harvest. Eat Greater Des Moines can make it easy to ensure excess food in the field is harvested and distributed throughout our community.

We are actively looking for partners:

  • Farmers

  • Urban Growers

  • Volunteers to glean

  • Volunteers to deliver

We need you.

Help us create a healthier food system that works for everyone.

What is gleaning?

Often, after harvest, farmers have food that’s left behind. Whether it was slightly flawed and unsellable, or there was simply too much of it, this is a common way that good food goes to waste.

Gleaning, which is when produce left behind during the harvest is gathered up and shared, is a way to take the excess food off the grower’s hands while also getting healthy, local food to local families.
