Waukee Community School Districts’ Picnic & Play, or free summer meal program, looks a bit different this year. Since COIVD began in March, School nutrition departments have had to shift from serving students on site to a drive-thru, grab and go style distribution. With the USDA extending waivers for schools to continue serving this way, school districts around the metro, including Waukee are coming up with creative way to engage students.
As a member of the Waukee Farm to School Committee, we were happy to create a fun activity focused around food and gardening for the students. Our intern Emma made seed kits using Topcrop Bush Bean seeds from Earl May. The kit also a compostable cup, soil, and instruction on how to grow their beans at home. Across the 3 meal sites, we distributed over 500 seed kits to children and their families!
Eat Greater Des Moines will be doing a second distribution of seed kits as well as a food waste activity kit on July 9th from 11am-12pm at:
