The 2021 Eat A Thon is quickly approaching and the Eat Greater Des Moines team is preparing both our hearts and bellies for the fight that is ahead. Our team is ready to claim our championship title yet again and we are so excited to share with you all the extraordinary group that will be representing Eat Greater Des Moines at the 2021 Eat A Thon Event. Without further adieu, let’s meet the team!

The Executive: Aubrey Alvarez

Our "Proud Quarantine Snacker", Aubrey, is the Executive Director and Co Founder of EGDM. Aubrey is on the board of Hunger Free Dallas County, Greater Des Moines Les Dames d'Escoffier International, and Greater Des Moines Food Rescue Network. She is also a member of OpportUNITY Food Insecurity Work Group, Hunger Free Warren County, Iowa Hunger Coalition, and Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute. A little more about Aubrey:

In another life, where talent and certifications weren’t an issue, what career would you have and why?
Oooh, I’d love to be able to recover furniture and be creative. I love a project.

If you could only eat one food cuisine for the rest of your life, what would you choose and why?
I could not live without pizza. So many ways to have it – breakfast, lunch, dinner. So many varieties and options.

What skills do you bring to the team to ensure another win for EGDM?
Past experience as a defending champion and regular practice of snacking throughout the pandemic.

The Celebrity: Adam Emmenecker

Our “Self Proclaimed Lover of Food”, Adam, is the Director of Market Strategy and Intelligence at Wellmark. Adam was introduced to EGDM back in 2019 when he helped lead the team to glory and conquered the Eat A Thon championship title and belt. Here's little more about Adam:

In another life, where talent and certifications weren’t an issue, what career would you have and why?
Travel and food critic. I like to explore new cultures and eat things.
If you could only eat one food cuisine for the rest of your life, what would you choose and why?
I want to eat all the things. Food and cultural variety and fusion make my plate a better place!
What skills do you bring to the team to ensure another win for EGDM?
I like to eat.

The Lawyer: Corrin Hatala

Our “Team Cheerleader'', Corrin, is a Senior Corporate Counsel at American Equity. In this position, she provides legal support for general corporate and securities related matters, including securities compliance, corporate governance, transactions, investments and contract-related matters. Corrin serves on the Board of EGDM as its Treasurer, and also serves on the Board of the Polk County Bar Association. She is the Chair of the Golf Committee and serves on the Executive Committee of the Young Lawyers Division of the Iowa Bar Association. A little more about Corrin:

In another life, where talent and certifications weren’t an issue, what career would you have and why?
I would be a stylist, because I love shopping and picking out items for others (and myself!).
If you could only eat one food cuisine for the rest of your life, what would you choose and why?
I would pick the broad umbrella of Asian cuisine. I love veggies, spice, and the incredible range of Asian flavors that exists.
What skills do you bring to the team to ensure another win for EGDM?
While I may not be the faaastest eater on the team, I was a college cheerleader at Iowa State, so I bring the encouragement!

The Constituent: Donya Jenkins-Gai

Our “Overall Competitor”, Donya, is a Community Health Worker at MercyOne. She connects patients who state they have a need for community resources. Donya serves on the African American Case Consultation Team for the Department of Human Services and/or Juvenile Court Services.  Donya was introduced to EGDM when she received an email about the opportunity to receive food boxes from Operation Fresh Produce Drop. She jumped right in and started off by having 75 boxes delivered to her home. Now Donya picks up from OFPD on a weekly basis on behalf of Revival Center Church. Here’s a little more about Donya:

In another life, where talent and certifications weren’t an issue, what career would you have and why?
I would have been a Cobbler. I absolutely adore shoes and I love to make stuff. I would have loved to make a women’s sexy pump and stylish boots.
If you could only eat one food cuisine for the rest of your life, what would you choose and why?
*Singing*…. Lasagnaaaaa. I do not know why this is my favorite. I’ve loved it since I was a kid. Although a fried chicken wing cannot stay whole on a plate in front of me for two seconds. Wing goes in and only bones come out in three seconds. I guess they’re a tie. Lasagna has layers and flavors that make your mouth ring with joy and chicken wings just scream EAT ME CAUSE I’M TASTY AND GOOD.
What skills do you bring to the team to ensure another win for EGDM?
I’m a foodie! I lllooovvveee good food, and I 100% love a challenge. Those two things together just say gobble, gobble…I’m a winner.

This year, we would love to see you make a Per-Ounce Pledge to help us continue our efforts in creating a healthier food system that works for everyone. Funds raised through the EAT-A-THON will support and expand Eat Greater Des Moines’ food rescue transportation program, support our Operation: Fresh Produce Drop initiative, and will help us provide proper food storage equipment to our community partners.
