Food rescue

A solution to food insecurity: Gathering and giving food that would otherwise go in the landfill.

What is food rescue?

Food rescue is the process of gathering donated, excess food that would otherwise be thrown away from food service providers and giving it to hungry people.

Eat Greater Des Moines rescues food as a core part of our services. We act as a bridge between those with extra food and those in need.

When a company has a pallet of oranges in need of a home, or dozens of pre-packaged day-old sandwiches that would otherwise be thrown away, we send drivers to pick it up.

It’s then transported to local organizations to distribute, such as libraries, homeless shelters, youth programs, and schools.

FAQs about food rescue.

  • Under Good Samaritan Law, those who make donations in good faith are protected if something goes wrong.

  • We will happily take your pre-packaged, unexpired, labeled food. We typically collect large amounts of food from wholesalers, retail stores, gas stations, grocery stores, food processers, manufacturers and others.

Here are a few examples of food we rescue:

    · Sandwiches, single package or perishable meals from restaurants, convenience stores, or gas stations.

    · Pallets of fruit, vegetables, or dry goods from wholesalers or distributors.

    · Extra dairy, meat, or eggs from groceries and other sellers.

    · Extra food from corporate cafeterias, schools and community centers or large gatherings. Smaller donations can be taken to your local food pantry or dropped off at one of the community fridges we support.

  • Anyone can be part of the solution: wholesale distributers, grocery stores, convenient stores, hotels, event centers, farmers, restaurants, etc. Do you have excess food? We’d love to partner with you.

  • We know that not everyone has a 16-foot refrigerator truck (or named it Barry, like we did). If you’re in need of an affordable set of loaner wheels, let us know, and we can see how Barry the truck can help.

If you are a nonprofit looking to borrow Barry, our favorite food transport truck, contact us.

  • We supply excess food to trusted community partners who help feed hungry people.

This includes deliveries to food pantries, nonprofits, daycares, schools, apartment complexes, churches, libraries, and community fridges.

We now partner with more than 200 organizations in Central Iowa!

  • We’re in a unique position to get food to hungry people without requiring those receiving it fill out paperwork and provide us with personal information. In other words, we don’t have to ask people to jump through hoops to prove they need food, which helps promote equitable access to it.

  • Please contact us now if you need food. We can help.

  • Eat Greater Des Moines take food safety seriously to ensure that it stays healthy and safe.

Members of our staff are food safety certified, and we only take food that is clearly labeled and dated before giving it to others.

At pickup and drop-off, we test the temperature of all the food. We have also instituted COVID-19 policies and incorporate food handling best practices.

We need you.

Help us create a healthier food system that works for everyone.
